The Ladies … Super Bowl Party Preview, or Preview Party, Your Choice

I hope the game is more exciting than this logo.

I hope the game is more exciting than this logo.

We are now a little over 48 hours away from the culmination of the entire 2008-09 NFL season.  Just like the World Series, this championship features a team making its unlikely first appearance in the big game and … a team from Pennsylvania.  Plus they are playing it in Tampa.  It’s certainly not the first time a city has hosted both a World Series and a Super Bowl, but it may be the first time a city outside of California has done it. So there’s your (unverified) Super Bowl fact of the day.

As this is a sports blog, written by sports fans, most of us Ladies have plans to watch the game. Some of us are neutral, some of us have a particular team, some of us are just obsessed with Kurt Warner, but we’ll all be parked in front of a television somewhere at game time.  Further details after the jump, but first:

POP (AND ALCOHOL)  QUIZ

Can you match the beverages below with the Lady who will be drinking it during the game? (Options: Lady Andrea, SA, Minda, Games Mistress, and Cinnamon Girl)

Where’s the TV?

Lady Andrea: I will be watching the game at the restaurant where I bartend. I get off work just in time for kick-off and we have an 18 ft high-def projection screen. It should be pretty awesome.

Cinnamon Girl: At home.

SA: At home. Yay comfort!

Metschick: On Super Bowl Sunday, it has now become a ritual to head to our friend Mario’s house for the game.  This will be my third SB there.  After all, can’t mess with tasty food, plenty of beer and good friends.

Mistress Christina: So I have no idea whether I will be watching the Super Bowl. I usually end up watching it somewhere. I will probably go to a friend’s house who is as apathetic about the outcome of the game as I am.

Minda: I’ll be watching the game with the residents on my floor (I’m an RA).

Games Mistress: I’ll be going to my friend Matt’s, to watch the game with the guys I’ve watched many of this year’s games with plus some additional people.  Also, I will give away $20 as part of my yearly reminder why I don’t usually gamble.

Youre welcome, Andrea (and Minda).

You're welcome, Andrea.

Rooting (Dis)Interests:

Minda: I’m rooting for Arizona, because I <3 Mr. Warner (and envy his wife), and because I typically go for underdogs.

Mistress Christina: The only Super Bowl I ever watched start to finish was in 2006, Seahawks v. Steelers. I am from Seattle and was still living there at the time. It was pretty big deal as the Seahawks had been serving up a steaming pile o’ shit during the playoffs, basically since I was born. Obv, we lost to the stupid Steelers.

Hence, I hope the Cardinals stomp the Steelers into the Tampa Bay ground. Fuck you, Pittsburgh, for steeling (see what I did there?) my city’s one chance at Super Bowl glory. Fuck you, for ruinging Sean Alexander’s career. (He was really never the same after that game) Plus, I like Arizona. I lived there last summer. So, Chris Goodman, here is my support for your sissy-mascotted team. Ha, they are totally screwed now.

Metschick: I’ll be rooting for a fun game, since I don’t really care who wins.    I will be looking out for the Sobe 3-D commercial after the second quarter.  I have my 3-D glasses ready to go!

Lady Andrea: I’m rooting for Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals. Warner’s my hometown Iowa boy and I’d love to see him win another ring. Plus Ben Roethlisberger is the biggest putzy oaf douchebag ever.

Games Mistress: I’m fairly neutral this year, but I’m kind of favoring Pittsburgh because 1) I have a few awesome grad school friends who are from/live there and 2) I have a little crush on Mike Tomlin.

SA: The great thing about not having NFL team is not having rivalries to deal with. I’m honestly just rooting for a good game, no matter who wins.

Mike Nolan never looked this good in his suits.

Pop Quiz Answers!

Dr. Pepper = Minda It tastes like watching football, if that makes any sense.

Dr. McGillicuddy’s Shots = Cinnamon Girl every time either team scores (yikes!)

Root Beer = SA I don’t drink.Although I did just buy some root beer and will probably drink that.

Bourbon = Lady Andrea My restaurant has an enormous selection of scotch and bourbon (and not the crap stuff, like Johnny Walker or Maker’s Mark) and I’ve become very fond of it. I might have our Weller Bourbon Flight, which is 7 year, 12 year and 18 Year W. L. Weller bourbon.

Blue Moon = Games Mistress Although I’m also totally in agreement with Minda on the Dr. Pepper issue.

Official Picks

Minda: Pittsburgh – 35, Arizona – 17. I would like for the Buzzsaw to win, but I don’t see it happening. Sorry, Leitch.

Games Mistress: Pittsburgh 21, Arizona 10. But I am usually totally wrong.

Mistress Christina: Cards 24, Steelers 17

Metschick: Steelers 28, Cardinals 14

Lady Andrea: Arizona over Pittsburgh, 24-17

Cinnamon Girl: Cardinals 27, Steelers 13

SA: I don’t understand why everyone keeps talking about the Cardinals offense and not the Pittsburgh defense. At least that’s what it seems. How quickly people forget about last year and New England’s OMGOFFENSE and how they got stopped at the end of the day. So I guess I’ll take Pittsburgh, 21-17. But like I said, I just want a good game.

Any Ladies… reader out there actually going to the game? (Is it too late to tag along? It’s cold here.) Or talk about your plans/picks/favorite beverages in the comments.

  1. Yes, fuck the Steelers! Although who doesn’t have a crush on Tomlin? I will be rooting for the Buzzsaw, esp. Warner and Fitz.

We will be watching from a chalet in Gatlinburg w/bunch of our friends. But alas, I shall have to forgo my fav football beverages this year as I am incubating the next generation. :)

  2. Thistle! Thanks for not boozing up the mini-Thistle, even if it IS the Super Bowl. Some things is just more important than drinkin’. :-) Congrats.

I very much enjoy my life when it includes quarterbacks stretching.

  3. Thanks sweetie! Yeah, at least I got New Year’s in before I found out. :) And there’s always next year–maybe the Bengals will be there. (Oh who am I kidding, they’ll probably be worse!)

  4. GM – I want to read that (Matty L’s inner thoughts)! I’m also fairly neutral…so this should be a fun one where I can cheer for everyone (and more booze).

Thistle – congrats on bringing in another generation…uh, of Bengals fans? I guess y’all need all the help you can get! ;)
