This is Kerry Rhodes. Kerry recovered a fumble last night. Fully dressed, of course.

Because the Jets played (and won! Woo!) on Thursday Night Football this week, one of the local stations picked up the game for those New Yorkers sans cable, or with cable providers who haven’t struck a deal with the NFL Network yet.  As a Jets fan, I appreciate the access, but as a football fan in general, I’m not really sold on this whole Thursday night football thing. Except for Thanksgiving.  That’s different, because it’s a holiday and the Lions deserve one day when people willingly watch them play.  (Also, my dad and grandfather need something to fall asleep in front of after we eat.)

As usual with prime time sporting events, the games start way too late.  The second half of the Jets-Patriots game began after 10 pm on the East coast.  If you happen to be a die-hard football fan, this will be the third time this week (after Sunday and Monday) that you will be up close to midnight watching football (especially if the game goes into freaking overtime like it did last night).  And if you’re a die-hard football fan who is in elementary school, you ‘ll be asleep (or have much more lenient parents than I did).

I know, Leon, I know. Sorry.

I know, Leon, I know. Sorry.

From a fantasy standpoint, Thursday games are a logistical nightmare.  This is how I play fantasy football: I get up Sunday morning, check the latest injury news and make the necessary adjustments to my lineup over my bagel and cream cheese.  This is enjoyable.  Adjusting my lineup on a Wednesday night or Thursday at work (on my lunch hour, I swear), when I’m tired and/or stressed from work and not really paying attention leads to me doing stupid things like picking BenJarvus Green-Ellis over Leon Washington for my third running back. This is not enjoyable.

I’m not a particular fan of college football on Thursdays either, though I understand the financial considerations involved for small conference teams.  (Although doesn’t it seem like a lot of this season’s games have featured major conferences? I know USC’s loss was on a Thursday.)

But maybe it’s just me.  Maybe I’m just too much a creature of habit to appreciate the allure of football on Thursdays.  Maybe I’m just exhausted from trying to sleep after the Jets upped my heart rate by blowing two leads and kicking the winning field goal from Feely’s most unreliable distance.  What do you think?

  1. Thursday football should be for the Jerkwater state’s of the world. It’s a bitch to stay up late when most of us have to go to work the nest day. For that, I blame the west coast.

Also, cable is for quitters. DirecTV is better.

  2. It cuts into watching The Office but otherwise I like the Thursday night football. I agree though that having to look at fantasy rosters in the middle of the week is kind of annoying.

  3. Being from the west coast, at least they’re *trying* to think of us, since usually TV programming just sort of ignores us.

That being said, Thursday night football bothers me. A lot.

  4. I’m not a big fan of NFL Thursday football. At least not until Thanksgiving. From a fantasy perspective it really sucks. If you are waiting for injury reports to set your lineup but your backup is playing on Thursday it really limits your options.
