It’s a glorious time of year! (Unless you’re a Leafs fan or Cory Clouston.) It’s time for our quick and dirty preview of the first round of the NHL Playoffs. Here are the matchups that begin Wednesday:
It’s Monday. How are your brackets looking? Like hell? Thought so.
First of all, a warm welcome to our special guest Ladies… Bracket Brawl participants: Melissa_thistle, Courknee35, Big10Bias and fellow Canuck/friend of the blog Andrew Bucholtz (you will go read his blog The 55-Yard Line now, won’t you?) Our current leader isn’t in our Ladies… group – due to technical difficulties, we had to create another group on ESPN.com so one gal could get her picks in. That gal is Buffalita, leading the pack with 460 points and picking Ohio State to win it all. CuteSports and Raven round out the Top 3 at 440 and 430 points respectively. Any hopes I had of repeating last year’s surprise success have been flushed down the proverbial toilet. I blame Butler.
Best of luck heading into Thursday! Sweet Sixteen will be hopefully be sweet for some of you.
So what else is going on? Continue reading
I love hockey. But the events of this past season are seriously testing my loyalty to this sport. Put it this way: there is a reason why I have grown to love baseball more in recent years.
I’ve been watching NHL hockey since Gretzky wore an Oilers jersey. Ugly, filthy hits have existed for years. But is it just me, or are they increasing? Continue reading
The timing was almost perfect: I took today off to recover from an arduous 11 hours of traveling from Ottawa to my East Coast home on Sunday to make up for a canceled direct flight on Friday (Mother Nature has been particularly bitchy to New Brunswickers this year. I swear, we have at least one snowstorm a week.) The hubby and I were all set to brew some coffee, snuggle on the couch and consume hours of TSN Tradecentre 2011 (the annual wall-to-wall coverage of the NHL Trade Deadline, for those of you unfamiliar.)
But not surprisingly, another snowstorm dumped 15 centimetres (at least) in our driveway and the kids stayed home from school. *sigh* So much for Date Day.
Trade Deadline Day was disruptive for some of our favorite players as well. Here’s a look at some of the notables who wound up with a new zip/postal code today, as well as a few who surprisingly managed to stay put.
Happy Monday, readers! Just a quick hit until I can write something more substantive tonight, as I couldn’t let this one slide. The talk of last night’s NHL Heritage Classic outdoors at McMahon Stadium was not about the crummy ice, Metric’s chilly
halftime second intermission performance or Kipper’s shutout – at least not at my house. No, the talk was about Calgary’s unis, which may or may not have been channeling some sort of wizardry. Seriously, isn’t the cut on those jerseys bad enough without dipping it into the ugly bath?
My affection for the older guys has been well documented here at Ladies… What can I say? Take young forward Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes, for example. Cute, yes, but far too young for me to buy him a drink. He’s not even legal in my province, anyway.
However, I’d hire Skinner to babysit my kids so that I could hit the town in my patent leather peep toe pumps with Tampa Bay’s recently acquired goaltender, Dwayne Roloson. Continue reading
Unlike my girl Diana, this is not the sweetest hangover – this is the WORST kind of hangover!
It’s not brought on by copious amounts of Yuengling and Makers Mark.
It’s not accompanied by the Stride of Pride.
It’s not cured by greasy food.
It’s not something that gets worse with age.
It’s a hangover that only comes with the harsh realization… football is OVER until Fall. Continue reading
Yes, it is Friday and I am filling in for CuteSports by woefully mailing it in. Please forgive me: it’s been a week full of earaches, barfing flu and vet visits. I have a school assignment screaming at me to get done, but quite frankly I’m content to just ignore it, crack open a microbrew, knit another baby cap and watch the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft (TSN, 7:30 ET) . My money is on Kessel getting picked last – his plus/minus is -19, people! What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
I would have loved to have picked my own team for today’s post, but you know, see above. It’s too bad. I would have enjoyed the sound of your laughter upon reading my first pick of Clarke MacArthur. Maybe I’ll still do this for Monday. We shall see.
What? You don’t give a flying Crosby about this All-Star Game nonsense? It’s driving you crazy waiting for Super Bowl Sunday and the Pro Bowl is a bore? At least there is the exciting Gaelic-Italian tradition of shirling to keep you entertained through the weekend…
Awhile back, I tried to enlighten the Ladies… readers on the hotness that is the Washington Capitals. Thanks to a super sexy GQ-esque team photo shoot, I was able to show you a bunch of hot hockey players in street clothes looking super fine. Well, the brains behind the GQ shoot decided to give us more. This recent shoot was done in conjunction with the re-launch of Scarlet Caps, a site about the Caps geared towards female fans. While I’m not a huge fan of the site, I’m definitely a huge fan of the photo shoots.
So follow me after the jump to see hot athletes in suits.
Hello, Ladies… readers! I know it’s been awhile since you’ve seen a post from me, but I’m back in full force and bringing you some hockey, of course! I was lucky enough to be able to purchase Winter Classic tickets for the Capitals vs. Penguins game in Pittsburgh on New Year’s Day. As a loyal Caps season ticket holder, I decided to make the purchase, book the hotel and make the trek to Western PA.
Make the trek with me after the jump to read all about my trip (and I promise some pictures of hot guys).
Happy New Year, readers! We hope you had a fabulous holiday that wasn’t marred by travel hiccups, barfing flu or Christmas morning plumbing problems (that last one happened to me. True story.) We’re back at it after a much-needed break. If you laid low this past weekend after a raucous New Year’s Eve, let’s fill you in on what you may have missed.
As we come closer to the end of the Festival of Lights, I realized that I had gone an entire six nights without any adorable Jewish hockey players! To make up for that oversight, I give you Trevor Smith.
When it comes to Steven Stamkos, colour me guilty: I kind of forget to point out how awesome he is because, well, he plays in Tampa Bay and I live in a Crosby-centric part of the world. How is last year’s Rocket Richard Trophy winner doing these days? Let’s get you up to speed: 20 points in the last 14 games, 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points overall, just trailing Sir Sidney.
Oh, and he’s kind of cute, too. Go see! Continue reading
Former Devils coach Pat Burns lost his long battle with cancer Friday in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The three-time Jack Adams trophy winner was 58.
We profiled Pat back in March at the announcement for the hockey arena being built in his name in the Eastern Townships. His last public appearance was last month when he attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The recent Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony reignited the debate that Pat should have been included in this year’s class. There’s no point in resuming that discussion. Anyone who followed the Habs, Leafs, Bruins or Devils during Pat’s career is well aware of his legacy, his passion for the game, his commitment to community and family, his fighting spirit. We don’t need the HHOF to acknowledge what we as hockey fans knew all these years. He’s there – he was there in our eyes a long time ago.
We extend our thoughts to Pat’s loved ones.
Trust me, it’s not like I’m bragging by any means – I’m actually pretty glad that I couldn’t actually watch the action, given that it went from 14-3 to 14-12 in the last few seconds, in true Buffalo fashion. But after 3 weeks in a row of losing by 3 points, a win by 2 is still a win! More celebrating, reflecting, whining, and rambling after the jump…
It’s been well-documented that we at Ladies… have a love/hate/complicated relationship with the moustache (and why is it so often associated with the mullet?), but this is clearly a case in which we wholeheartedly support its existence. As you may be aware, we are halfway through Movember, a movement designed to bring awareness to men’s health and specifically prostate cancer.
Community support always makes our hearts melt, so we salute the numerous athletes who have taken up the moustachioed cause. Continue reading
Yeah, I suppose most sports sites do their previews before the season starts. But we think different here at Ladies… Also, we’re hella busy and I needed a few days to deal with that whole ALCS outcome, obviously. I spent the weekend doing a lot of intentional walking. I trust Girardi did the same.
Let’s focus on hockey now, shall we? The Pacific Division, y’all!
Happy Columbus Day and Canadian Thanksgiving! The NHL season is finally underway, and yes, we realize we are a little late filing our previews. But it’s still early enough in the season – heck, TORONTO is tied for first in the East as I type this. I’m not joking! See?
Sorry. I know we’re two games in but it’s been far too long since I’ve seen these guys at the top of the standings. Just let me enjoy this Very Special Moment.
OK! On to the Northwest! Continue reading
The countdown to October 7th is underway! That’s when the puck drops and the ice is prepped for a brand-new NHL season. Raven and I will be bringing you previews the only way we know how…with photos of hot men.
We bring you the Northeast after the jump.
Happy last weekend of summer as we know it! For those of you not spending it at work, or moving to your dorm, or counting down the hours until you can put the kids on the school bus, we bring you five ways to spend that (hopefully) least of laborious days. Continue reading
A couple of days ago it looked like Ilya Kolvalchuk was going to be a New Jersey Devil for more or less the rest of his pro career, as he signed a $102 million dollar, 17-year deal that was pretty much unprecedented in professional sports. (Unless you count the Islanders’ DePietro deal, which I don’t — that would be like saying the Raiders personnel decisions are in any way comparable to the rest of the NFL.) Yesterday, however, the NHL nixed the deal (and it appears the Devils may have known this was coming even before the press conference).
As chosen by our readers, Washington Capitals center Brooks Laich!
The Saskatchewan native with the dreamy blue eyes racked up some respectable numbers in 2009-10: 25 goals and 34 assists in 78 games in the regular season; two goals, one assist and one spare tire in their seven postseason games against the Canadiens (Moment of Silence on Raven’s behalf, please.)
We love, love, love Laich! Oh, NHL training camp. You can’t come soon enough.
The Ladies… have an innate sense of right and wrong. For example, this trade that Montreal made yesterday to ship their better goaltender to the Blues? Wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong.
It should probably be wrong to have to choose between two hot hockey players, but we’re making you do that anyway. We’re down to two gentlemen in our NHL Playoffs of Hotness. Vote now through Monday night at 9pm Eastern.
If loving these hot men is wrong, we don’t want to be right.
So hockey is officially over until October, but we’re not done with hockey here. It’s Conference Finals time! We’re down to the final four, and the polls close on Sunday night at 8pm EST. So vote away after the jump.
Readers, you have raised my eyebrows. Sid the Kid, knocked out of the first round by Flyer Mike Richards. Steckel, running away with the votes in his tiebreaker against RYAN KESLER (and NO, Raven, that baby photo was not a ploy ;))
The Divisional Semis are complete. Round 2 heats up with eight fellas worthy of Blanche Devereaux’s attention (rest in peace, Rue). Make your choice after the jump now through Sunday at 8PM Eastern. Continue reading
In honor of the Stanley Cup Finals taking place right now, it’s time we feature some hotties to watch. Since I couldn’t bring myself to even go on the Flyers website, I’m bringing you some hotties from the Hawks!
So take a trip with me after the jump to see some hot boys from Chi-Town.
Hope you can forgive us for taking an extended holiday weekend (as for the Canadian, my excuse was Monday night soccer for one of my little Bees).
Thanks for all who voted in the first round of our NHL Playoffs of Hotness. Polls are now closed – or at least, they’re supposed to be. Polldaddy wasn’t playing nice earlier. Anyway, we have one wee little problem preventing us from moving on to Round Two.
We have a tie! Continue reading
Now that we’ve given away the hardware for this year’s NHL Playoff Beards Awards (props to Raven for her excellent research once again), we bring you the NHL Playoffs of Hotness.
This works just like the NBA edition. Vote for the hockey hottie you love. We’ll narrow down the choices bracket-style over the next couple of weeks. Thanks to our readers for their suggestions on such short notice! Don’t worry: we’ve included a few guys from the Stanley Cup finalists Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers.
You have until Monday at 8pm Eastern to cast your vote. Yes, we’re making our readers work hard these days! Continue reading
The Chicago Blackhawks swept the San Jose Sharks and are the first team to get a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Lucky for us, the Blackhawks aren’t so difficult on the eyes. Everyone wins when the Blackhawks win!
Follow the jump for all the hockey hotties.
Yes, the Ladies… have been a bit busy this week. I’m home early for the long weekend so that I can be present while my septic tank gets cleaned out. I can barely watch without stifling a gag, but such is the life of a homeowner in the quasi-sticks. Better than paying property taxes in town, I keep reminding myself.
Let’s kick off H&R in fitting style with this latest crap about Brett Favre. It seems that during a pep talk for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, he stated that if they could make it back to the College World Series, he’d return for one more season in the NFL. Continue reading
