Monday Morning Abs: Congratulations, Grey Cup Champs!

Montreal Alouettes

Happy Monday! Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving! I’m recovering from the aftereffects of cold medicine so I’ll keep this brief. Our congrats to the Montreal Alouettes, winners of the 98th Grey Cup in a 21-18 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. I was able to last through the 3rd quarter when it was tied 11-11 (before the Neo Citran kicked in) but I had a feeling when I crawled into bed that it would be a fight to the finish. And it was: the Roughriders might have been able to tie the game had Darian Durant not channeled Favre and thrown an interception in the final minute.

By the way, I am three for four for seeing a professional team during the season they win a championship. I think I’m due for another trip to the Big Apple.

P.S. We’re thinking of you, Anthony Calvillo.

FINALLY! Buffalo has a WIN!

OH YEAH!

Trust me, it’s not like I’m bragging by any means – I’m actually pretty glad that I couldn’t actually watch the action, given that it went from 14-3 to 14-12 in the last few seconds, in true Buffalo fashion.  But after 3 weeks in a row of losing by 3 points, a win by 2 is still a win!  More celebrating, reflecting, whining, and rambling after the jump…

Support for the ‘stache

Yankees

Just try to top the "State Trooper Giambi" look, as sported by Mike Mussina a few years back.

It’s been well-documented that we at Ladies… have a love/hate/complicated relationship with the moustache (and why is it so often associated with the mullet?), but this is clearly a case in which we wholeheartedly support its existence. As you may be aware, we are halfway through Movember, a movement designed to bring awareness to men’s health and specifically prostate cancer.

Community support always makes our hearts melt, so we salute the numerous athletes who have taken up the moustachioed cause. Continue reading

Hit and Run: Crazy Endings Edition

Saints

I mean, what else would you expect on Hallowe'en? (AP Photo)

There just something about Hallowe’en that brings out the crazy. Dressing like a zombie. Dressing like Gaga. Drinking booze that is clearly coloured by artificial susbtances and possibly has floating eyeballs. Eating far too many mini Coffee Crisps. These jackets. Whatever bizarre behaviour you engage in is perfectly acceptable on October 31st, or at least the Friday or Saturday closest to it.

The sports world was also full of crazy on the weekend. For instance… Continue reading

Rhinestones are the New Pink Jersey: The NFL’s New “Fit For You” Clothing Campaign

If I had to choose between this and a man sized jersey, I'd pick the one without the sparkles and frilly sleeves.

This week the NFL launched a new line of women’s clothing and accessories, and also a major advertising campaign.  While most of the press releases are touting that the days of “shrink it and pink it” for women’s NFL apparel are over, is the new Fit For You campaign really any better? Well, yes and no.

Hit & Run: Fantasy Football Disasters Edition

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Guess who writes for a sports blog and has Reggie Bush on both her fantasy teams, including one that is in such bad shape as far as running backs go that she is resorting to starting Fred Taylor and 3 WRs for week 3?  Yeah.  So.  (Though as someone who dates a Saints fan, I must note there’s a certain amount of relief among the NOLA fanbase that Reggie’s leg is “just” broken and he didn’t reinjure his knee.)

Injuries and fantasy football lineups thus being on my mind, I thought I’d take a quick survey of other developing situations around the league that might impact your fantasy choices this week.

Hump Day Hottie: Boise State

After watching the craziness that was the Boise State/Virginia Tech game this past Monday, I noticed that Boise State wasn’t hurting for any hotties on their squad.  While I felt a bit dirty checking out the young(er) boys, I decided it would be a disservice to not share these boys with the Ladies… readers.

So take a trip with me to Boise, Idaho where potatoes and hotties abound.

Five Ways To Spend Labor Day

Twins

Yes, some people have to work today.

Happy last weekend of summer as we know it! For those of you not spending it at work, or moving to your dorm, or counting down the hours until you can put the kids on the school bus, we bring you five ways to spend that (hopefully) least of laborious days. Continue reading

I Was There: The Ladies… Do New Meadowlands Stadium

Yes, I know it’s just exhibition time and the games don’t really count for anything. But when this Buffalo loving Lady had the opportunity to check out the new Jets/Giants digs without it being -20° out, I obviously jumped. Here is a (almost literally) bird’s eye view and review of the fabulous new stadium from last Friday’s Jets game against Washington (which started as a snooze, looked as if it may end in a win, and ended in a 16-11 loss for NY).

Hit and Run: September’s coming soon

Hands up: who cannot wait for September?

Cowboys Texans

No, no, NO, Malcolm Sheppard of the Texans! That's not what I meant by "Hands up!" (AP Photo)

Oh, September. What’s not to love? The return of NFL football, baseball hurling towards the Fall Classic, hockey and basketball waiting in the wings. We’re almost there, but in the meantime, here’s a quick rundown of what happened the last weekend of August.

We’re ready for some football: The Ladies… do Molson Stadium

Molson Stadium

While we’re still a few weeks away from the start of the NFL 2010 season, the CFL season is in full swing. I recently has a chance to take in my first ever CFL game a few weeks ago when the Grey Cup Champion Montreal Alouettes hosted their home opener against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (and yes, I meant to post this last week but life got in the way. So sorry.)

Follow me after the jump for the lowdown on Percival Molson Stadium.

Happy Start of the Football Season

I’m taking a post mulligan. I apologize for the thrown-together nature of my post.

Let me make it up to you:

Ok, enough of that Bush. Because it turns out there’s another cutie Bush in the league. He’s on my team and I didn’t even know it. Let me introduce you to Green Bay Packer Jarrett Bush:

Kind of adorable, right?

He’s even cuter partaking in a Packers tradition wherein kids lend the players bikes to transport them between Lambeau Field and the practice facility.

Sadly, these are the best non-action shots of this new arrival to my radar. Here’s hoping we get to see some more of Jarrett at the season goes on!

Oh, dear. GAWD!

Lady Bee here for the vacationing Raven. So, um, what fresh hell is this? T.O. and Ochocinco on the same team?!! Ochocinco telling ESPN this will be a great year? Oh, you said it, Chad! With apologies to loyal Ladies… reader thistlewarrior, we cannot wait for this circus to get underway. How much ego and douchebaggery can one locker room take? How long until T.O. hangs his good buddy Chad out to dry? Or complains about Palmer not throwing enough passes to him?

Of course, all that said, could we expect Terrell to take the high road while Chad pulls a hissy fit over face time? Please, dear readers. We want your take on this. Better yet, start making wagers on when the shit hits the fan. I’m already predicting a minor spat over who is Batman and who is Robin (guess which role T.O. has assumed?) Somehow, I can’t see that partnership going as smoothly as this one did.

I rest my case.

All the best, Bengals fans. You’re in for a heckuva season.

Sports on the Day of No Sports

The Tour de France knows not of your "off day," silly Americans.

Yesterday was the “Off Day” in the All-Star Break, or as it is sometimes called, The Day So Devoid of Major Sporting Events* that ESPN Invented an Awards Show Just to Have Something To Air.   Because this year’s Off Day also fell just after the close of the World Cup, things feel particularly quiet this year.  But that didn’t mean there was no athletic competition to enjoy …you just might have to leave the contiguous United States for some of it.

*Except the Tour de France , which ESPN doesn’t count since Versus has the rights and Lance isn’t going to win. That’s current leader Andy Schleck above. He’s from Luxembourg.

NFL: I have to root for WHO now?

Do not try to win me over with those abs, Jason. I'm not that kind of girl.

I hate Jason Taylor.

I am a Jets fan, so hating Jason Taylor is as natural as breathing.  Moreover, Jason Taylor has been a Dolphin since 1997, and I have only been a Jets fan since 2002. The Jets have been through 2 GMs, 3 head coaches, 5 starting QBs, and a whole mess of punters in that time — which means hating Jason Taylor has been one of the few consistent things about my Jets fandom.

So you can see how the past week has been a bit difficult for me.

2010 Draft – What Were They Thinking??

So the draft came and went, and I have to say that I really wasn’t super excited about this. Will the Bills pick up a QB? Will we get some more horrid rookie OL? Maybe a RB? Too many questions (so I opted for happy hours) and much to my surprise, more or less everyone is disappointed with the Buffalo Bills’ choices.  Self included. Let’s take a look, shall we? Ohhhh… It’s A Lady!

When I read that Natalie Randolph was named, in early March, the new head coach for Washington’s Coolidge High Colts, a MALE varsity football team, I was a tad worried.  You see, while I am obviously all for the advancement of woman in sports and typically held male jobs, I don’t think it should happen, just because.

I’m kinda old school I guess. No matter what the job, I believe the person with the most to offer the position, should land the gig.  This may be an unpopular sentiment because of the fact that minorities and woman haven’t been given the same opportunities along the way to become the most qualified… And before you prepare to pelt me with whatever food you have laying around, hear me out.

In Honor of Valentine’s Day… The Best Sports Bromances

H/T to Your Nation's Capital over at Japer's Rink for the image. She put all the pretty hearts around my two favorite Russians: Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin!

Sometimes there is one person that can make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  It could be a spouse or significant other.  Sometimes it’s a crush or a close friend…and sometimes it’s a teammate.  So in honor of Valentine’s Day and teammate love, I bring you some of the best sports bromances!

How Sweet the Sting…

It’s been a little gloom and doom in the bomber household these past few days…

You see there was this semi-important professional sporting match on Sunday, and despite my best efforts of yelling and screaming at the tv, my boys did not come away with that Lombardi trophy.

While I hold no ill will towards those gents in black and gold, I can’t help but wallow in my loss.

It got me thinking about championships and fandom- more specifically what impacts us more, the wins or losses?

Who Dat? And while we’re on it, what was up with those ads??

Riding out the Ladies… Super Bowl excitement further, I’d like to extend my congratulations to Drew, Coach Peyton, and the city of New Orleans on winning the 44th Super Bowl!!!  And call it my nature, blame it on where my interests lie, but I found it only fitting to include this awesome video for K. Gates’ “Who Dat”, along with my own analysis and recap of the (incredibly disappointing) Super Bowl ads.

Congratulations New Orleans Saints, your Super Bowl 44 Champs

We could post picture upon picture from last night’s game and celebration, but let’s be honest, we’re all smitten with Drew Brees after the images of him holding and talking to his child while tears streamed down this face.

The proud papa brought the whole huge party back to a human level and there were plenty of folks who were crying right with him.

Congratulations, Drew, Sean Payton, and the rest of the New Orleans Saints. Well played, guys. Well played.

You can see tons of photos from the celebration and the game in this gallery at nola.com

An exercise in drawing cartoon hearts.

So by now, you may have seen this profile of Saints linebacker Scott Fujita.

If you’re me, you’ve now spent the last twenty minutes drawing hearts around his name while daydreaming about skipping through New Orleans hand-in hand and dispensing bon mots about social justice and equality.

Then again, if you’re a normal person, you thought ‘Huh, cool.’ and went on with your daily life.

Let’s just jot down the reasons why Scott Fujita is my new boyfriend who just doesn’t know it yet, shall we? Continue reading

Ladies… Linkups: Your Pre-Super Bowl Edition

I would have loved to have had a Friday Foodie for you, but with my recent vacation, the two night classes I’ve been taking and the usual mama and work stuff it’s been too hard to find the time.

But you know who does it better anyway? The original author of our Football Foodie Fridays, The Starter Wife, who has been busily dishing out 14 days of delectable Super Bowl eats, including Sugar Pie. Sugar Pie! I didn’t know people outside of French Canada made this! Youpi!

Speaking of countdowns, Fack Youk has been counting down the days until spring training begins, pinstripe-style. If you love baseball history, check it out over your lunch break. It’s good reading!

The Ladies… also salute those who gave us a kind shout-out in the blogosphere in recent days, like Stumptown Magazine whose writers discuss everything Portland, Oregon. Like Rudy Fernandez.

We also thank the ladies at the funny and feminist Not My Gal for including ours among their My Gal Blogs of the Week. It’s where you’ll find an insightful piece on that ad. Regardless where you stand on the issue, check it out.

Mens’ hockey is fun to watch and all, but we’re really excited about womens’ Olympic hockey! CuteSports linked you to Team USA’s profiles a few days ago. Here’s where you can learn more about Team Canada. I wonder if it’s too late to order a Wickenheiser jersey for next weekend.

And now I give you stretching Saints…

Enjoy the game Sunday!

Hit and Run: Here Comes the Super Bowl!

Three more days to endure until Super Bowl Sunday.  Fortunately, I’ve had a busy week to take my mind off the waiting.  Also fortunately, there’s some great pictures coming out of Miami to whet your football appetite and save me from having to write too much.

First up, Daylife.com (via Getty Images), has a whole series of pictures of the painting of the turf, which I found fascinating.

Love for Ndamukong (’cause he’s Suh effing awesome)

Yes, your writer is that lame and punny today. But I just got back from the Caribbean and am feeling all warm and fuzzy and have a desire to look at more sea creatures (explained in a mere moment). And with the Pro Bowl behind us and the Super Bowl (and Puppy Bowl!) ahead, I felt the need to interject before draft hype gets too out of hand and remind everyone just how awesome Ndamukong Suh is on all levels.  Best photo EVER after the jump.
