Ladies…Book Club: The Baseball Codes

The Mariners’ pitchers and catchers reported last weekend (I guess they need lots of extra practice), almost everyone else reports this weekend — baseball is almost back but we’re still a few weeks from even exhibition game play. Never fear, I have the perfect book for those of you who need a real-game-action-fix now: The Baseball Codes by Jason Turbow with Michael Duca.  (The book was released in 2010 so I’m a bit behind. Blame my brother who “meant” to get me this as a present last year, then never got around to sending it to me. He did get me two books this year, of which this was one.) Most baseball fans know of the existence of most of these rules, but few realize how far some players go to enforce them — nor how saturated the day-to-day business of the major leagues is with the business of teaching, following, enforcing, and (as sometimes proves necessary) breaking these unwritten codes.

Ladies… Book Club: Yes, Bee is reading Simmons

Sports GuyA few months back, you may recall I mentioned winning a copy of Bill Simmons’ The Book of Basketball from CBC Radio 3 through an e-mail contest. Honestly, it was one of those moments of “Har, har, I’m going to send an entry because wouldn’t it be funny if the Yankee fan won a book written by the Yankee hater!” And then I did. Again, many thanks, Vish!

So a funny thing happened: I actually started reading it this summer, mostly because I have a friend who’s a huge fan and I’m constantly teasing him about his manlove for Simmons. I thought it was time to see what the fuss was about. And you know what? I don’t hate it. Continue reading

Ladies… Book Club: A-Rod

When the idea of a Ladies… Book Club was mentioned, I realized that I better beef up on my sports-centric reading material.  A few days later, I was at my local wholesale club and stumbled upon a gem: A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez by Selena Roberts.  It was half-price and full of juicy, A-Rod gossip.  It was fate.

We were pretty much inundated with excerpts from this much-discussed tell-all, so I felt familiar with it immediately.  We all thought we knew what the book was about: steroids.  Well, my friends, we weren’t entirely right.

Ladies… Book Club debuts!

Ladies... Book Club

Welcome to the inaugural meeting of the Ladies… Book Club! Have a seat on our comfy couch. Oh, you can just toss that NASCAR 2007 Media Guide on the floor. Care for a coffee? Cheesecake brownie? Of course Blonde Bomber made those! They are yum.

If there’s anything we love as much as sports and cute boys, it’s curling up with a good book. The Ladies… Book Club is all about what we’re reading in sports-related literature, fiction and non-fiction. As this recurring series develops, we hope to provide you with some recommended reading during those quiet off-season nights – and of course generate plenty of discussion!

Today’s selection – and the inspiration for our new series – is brought to you by one of my little Bees, who came home from the school library with a book that wasn’t Magic Tree House for a change. Curl up with our first recommendation after the jump.
