Hands up: who cannot wait for September?
Oh, September. What’s not to love? The return of NFL football, baseball hurling towards the Fall Classic, hockey and basketball waiting in the wings. We’re almost there, but in the meantime, here’s a quick rundown of what happened the last weekend of August.
Admittedly, it’s been a while since Cole Hamels graced us with his presence here at Ladies… Today he’s here with good reason: he pitched eight shutout innings Sunday to bring the Phillies to a 5-0 win over the Padres and a sweep of the series. Philly needed this: as I type this, they are two games back of the Braves in the NL East and hold a game and a half lead over San Francisco in the Wild Card.
Just when we thought Manny Ramirez would quietly fade away from our consciousness this season, this happened.
How about some basketball? Across the ocean, Kevin Durant helped lead Team USA to a 99-77 win over Slovakia at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, scoring 22 points over 23 minutes. Really. Next up for Team USA at the FIBA tourney is Brazil today.
Bad news for anyone who had Antonio Bryant or Lavernaeus Coles on their fantasy football radar – hey, there may have been someone! – as both receivers were cut Sunday by the Bengals and Jets respectively. Bryant has been recovering from a knee injury, so he may yet land somewhere. Coles may possibly call it a career.
Oh…see what I did up there? That’s the perfect segue into this:
You’re most welcome. That was my first ever concert when I was 16: “Everything” tour, Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto. Awesome. We missed NKOTB and Tiffany by a few days (thank gawd!) but had we made our family trip to T.O. two weeks later, I could have seen the Replacements open for Tom Petty. Sadness!
