This weekend is the sports equivalent of being handed a heart-shaped velvet box of decadent dark chocolates and not knowing whether to start nibbling on the dipped hazelnut or the coconut creme. But let’s face it – we deserve to be spoiled! Yes, there’s this party going on in Vancouver right now, but if you need something to keep you busy until the Pacific timezone catches up to, there’s lots to choose from.
It’s also NBA All-Star Weekend in Dallas. Oddly enough it seems they’re getting more snow in the Big D than they are in Van City, you know, WHERE IT’S NEEDED WEATHER GODS! The Slam Dunk Contest and Three-Point Shootout is set for Saturday night, while the All-Star Game takes place Sunday afternoon (8pm ET, TNT)

NASCAR’s back, and there’s nothing like kicking off your season with your biggest race of the year, which is of course the opposite of what everybody else does. The Camping World Truck race has been postponed until tomorrow night at 6:30 ET (ESPN2) about five hours after the Nationwide series race in which one Danica Patrick is making her Nationwide debut. She starts 15th, and I’m bracing for an entire afternoon of patronizing comments from that unsufferable DW. Don’t get me started. Please. (P.S. she’s not the only gal racing this weekend. Watch for Chrissy Williams!)
Oh, the 500 itself goes Sunday (1pm ET, Fox) Carl Edwards has the pole, and as always our hearts.
The NHL will be taking a break to make way for THE BEST EVER HOCKEY TOURNAMENT! We’ll have to wait until Day 5 to see the men’s teams, but the women take to the ice Sunday (Canada vs. Slovakia, WOO!)
In the meantime, there’s speed skating (Men’s 5000 metre and women’s 3000m), ski jumping, alpine skiing, biathlon and…I heave a heavy sigh here…luge. That sound you heard tonight during the Opening Ceremonies was a million hearts breaking as the Georgian team marched through the stadium in memory of their teammate Nodar Kumaritashvili. Our thoughts are with them.
After years of anticipation and preparation, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games have indeed begun. Having witnessed the Olympic Torch come through my town, and having very recently visited beautiful British Columbia, I could not be more thrilled. Watch for Clara Hughes, dual Olympian (she’s a champion speedskater and a cyclist) to carry Canada’s flag.
