Hit and Run: Keeping it Canadian

Serena and Martina - Hit and Run aug09

Two tennis greats are no match for the geek-out allure of what looks like an iPhone. (AP)

The much reviled City of Toronto (if you are to believe a bunch of Coors Light billboards in Vancouver) is hosting the WTA this week. Today, Serena Williams advanced to the semis at the Rogers Cup with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lucie Safarova (which hardly seems fair – Safarova is ranked 46th. Ah, well…) Serena’s next opponent: Elena Dementieva.

Delicious Darian Durant

As we Canadian NFL fans salivate over the prospect of a new season, we have to remind ourselves that oh yeah, we actually have a league of our own. Darian Durant – yes, he of North Carolina – leads the Saskatchewan Roughriders (those with the wheat on their helmets) and their 4-3 record into Montreal tonight to take on the Alouettes. So how is Darian doing these days? He’s passed for over 1,500 yards this season and has 9 TDs, which unfortunately pales in comparison to 87-year-old Montreal QB Anthony Calvillo’s 2,175 yards and 11 TDs. So I may check it out in between innings of the Yankees vs. The Brad Penny Implosion.

How about some hockey news that has nothing to do with Patrick Kane’s transgressions, Dany Heatley’s whining or Brian Burke’s attempts at creating Broad Street Bullies II (Wayne Primeau, Burkie. Seriously.) The Canadian Olympic orientation camp starts Monday in Calgary, so Hockey Canada released its rosters. Included: Joe Thornton. Yum!

  1. I cannot tell you how much I have looked forward to Team Canada’s orientation camp. I might be an American, but I love my Canadian hockey players!! I have been waiting all summer to see some new pictures of Mike Green!!!

    • We welcome ALL fans :) Hey. Team USA has some cuties and ridiculous talent too! I’m sure they’ll be a force to be reckoned with this winter.

  2. I have my Team Canada sweater all ready for the WJCs which I will be attending and hopefully remembering at least part of, and I think *fingers crossed* I convinced my uncle to cough up tickets to at least one hockey game at the Olympics. Let the games begin!

  3. Greenie, Sid, Fleury, Rick Nash and Toews on the same team – are they TRYING to give me heart failure at the hotness?

And then facing off against Patrick Sharp and Cam Ward? Why don’t I just go ahead and call the hospital now to book my bed for Thursday
