I was there (sort of): CWS championship series, Game 1

If you haven’t been watching the College World Series, tonight would be a good time to tune in to ESPN. Tonight is game two of a 3-game championship series between LSU and Texas, two teams who fully expect to play in Omaha every summer and who are generally fun to watch.

Rosenblatt Stadium didnt stay empty for long after this Tigers warmup!

Last night was no exception.  LSU stud pitcher Louis Coleman (a Royals draftee and a big reason I’m rooting for LSU here) randomly gave up 3 homers in one inning. Texas – not exactly a power team – ended up homering two other times, but LSU’s pen kept the game tight while the Tiger offense squeezed out the tying runs in the 9th, and the winning run in the 11th. LSU reliever Matty Ott was notably awesome, holding the ‘Horns down – and hitless – for the final three innings.

I imagine that Louis Coleman is thanking Matty Ott for saving his ass. Man-hug!

Oh, and also? It was hot out in Omaha for pretty much the first time this year: The heat index at the start of the game was 107. My friend and I were in the right field bleachers, trying our best to stay hydrated and praying our sunscreen could hang in there under the immense pressure of the sun, but had to leave early for health reasons. However, while we were there, we had help in staying hydrated from an unlikely source – a Texas fan next to us bought us a bottle of water before the game, even though he could clearly see our purple and gold beads.

The friendly Texas fans were rewarded for their generosity with a tough loss.

Not to get all cheesy here, but that shouldn’t have surprised me. Once the game gets going, everyone means business, but before games, nobody is afraid to be friendly (as Eric Angevine pointed out at ESPN.com. Oh hey! I’m quoted in that story!). Omaha in June is just nice that way.

Tune in at 6 central tonight to catch Game 2, along with lovingly edited pieces about how glorious Omaha is. ESPN does a great job with those, and Omaha is my town, so I want all you lovely people to see how great it is here. Oh, and cute college players in hi-def. That’s fun too.
