Each week this Hot Stove season, we’ll look at some done deals and juicy rumors involving our favorite MLB hotties, and the occasional not-really-a-hottie, but still worth talking about.
Before we get to the Hot Stove, let’s take a moment to appreciate the piece of history the NFL world bore witness to yesterday. Click on the picture for a very short, very apt summary of the Lions’ season.
Baseball stuff after the thingie.
The big story is obviously Mark Teixeira signing with the Yankees for 8 years and 90.45 million loaves of bread. The Red Sox were thought to be close to landing the first baseman, but they only offered about 6,963 Ford Tauruses and lost the sweepstakes.
Speaking of catchers, Ryan Doumit signed a 3-year extension with the Pirates.
The San Francisco Giants are bringing Randy Johnson home as he closes in on his 300th win. I will not post a pic of Johnson, so here’s a less-terrifying seagull instead, in honor of this legendary video.
The Reds needed help in center field, so they turned to former Rockies OF Willy Taveras. The deal is for 2 years, but the dollar amount isn’t available yet.
Lastly, the Minnesota Twins picked up pitcher R.A. Dickey, who looks like a pirate and throws a knuckleball. I had never seen a knuckleballer pitch in person before seeing Dickey pitch in a AAA game last year, and it turns out it’s really unnerving to watch.
Check back later today for what should be a pretty cool end-of-the-year post! Also – note to Royals fans and people who like David DeJesus: today’s featured 2008 game in the Baseball’s Best series is the DeJesus walkoff game, which is also the game where Mark Grudzielanek got his 2000th career hit. Good times. Watch for free at 2 this afternoon!
