I Should Have Today Off

Before the Big XII, before the corporate sponsor, before even the Cotton Bowl, there was the Texas Game.

It is Red River Rivalry Eve once more, and I am at work.  If I was still in college, I’d have the day off, because TPTB at the University of Oklahoma got tired of holding class on a day when half the student body was driving I-35 South.  I hate being an adult.

Enough grumbling. It’s OU-TX weekend again, y’all! (College football brings out my accent.  Even when I type, apparently.) Even though I’ve never been lucky enough to attend the game in person, nothing will stop me from following the game live from wherever I happen to be.  Even if I am stuck in a hotel room in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan listening to the play by play as it is relayed by my friend’s father over her cell phone.

But that was last year.  This year, I should actually be able to watch the game on TV — no small feat, considering I live in the Northeast and Penn State is a top ten team this year.  But since this is the fifth time in the history of the rivalry that both teams are ranked in the Top 5 — guess who is number one? — not much is going to stop this game from reaching a national audience.

I don’t know why I love this particular football game so much.  Perhaps it’s because it’s a rivalry game that happens every year (unlike Nebraska) and doesn’t involve me having to watch the game in a room full of the opposing team’s fans, most of whom I’m related to (unlike Oklahoma State).  It’s usually OU’s (and sometimes Texas’s, too) first big test of the season, in recent years it’s often had conference and national title implications, and let’s face it, those aerial shots of a half red-half orange stadium are just freakin’ cool.  Plus, if the Sooners score ten points this week, they’ll become the first college football program to score 30,000 total points.  And it’s been 10 years since OU hasn’t scored at least ten points in the Texas game, so there’s a better than average chance they’ll do so on Saturday.

Superstition — and the absolute mess I made of my World Series picks last week — prevents me from doing too much advance trash talking, though.  Let’s look at some pictures!

  2. I love this game, too. Just as a Big 12 fan, it is a special game to watch. A few years ago, when it was 1 vs. 2, my mother asked me to go out to breakfast with her the day of the game. I said I would go as long as we were back for kickoff. She drove like a maniac to have me home by 11 … just to find out that the local affiliate was broadcasting Michigan St. Penn St. I was Pissed with a capital P.

  4. Games Mistress,
One of our writers is liveblogging Texas-OU this weekend and wanted someone to represent Oklahoma. Interested? He’s from Texas but not a hardcore Longhorn fan per se so he’s looking for an OU counterpart to balance out the Red River Rivalry.

If so, drop me a line jp@pyleoflist.com

  5. CC, that’s what happened to me last year. We double-checked to make sure our hotel was in the coverage map for the game, and then come game time the local affiliate inexplicably decided to run whatever game was on ESPN2 at the time. Neither team in that game was ranked and neither was located particularly close to where we were (I think it was Miami of Ohio and somebody). SO. ANNOYING.

  6. I had no idea that any of the Ladies…. were OU fans! That’s very exciting! It’s okay, GM. I start texting with an accent when I’m talking to any of my Oklahoma relatives.

  7. Boomer Sooner GM and Katni!!! I’m just happy that for once I get to hear about Big 12 ball instead of the SEC ALL day…

  8. Well, could not have asked for a better, more exciting game. As a diehard Longhorn, raised in Austin and went to UT, I love this game – but expected the Sooners to win today. Very happy the Horns won but enjoyed the back and forth. Two great teams! Good luck Sooners the rest of the year!

  9. This was one of the best games ever! Gotta say that I was freakin’ scared (and still am now that we’re ranked number one b/c of the way the season is going w/ all the upsets). The coach at my school is from OK, so on Friday I wore my burnt orange and she wore her OU red. My class had PE that day, so guess how I was greeted when I picked up my first graders? Chants of boomer sooner! Of course I properly re-trained them and we marched into the gym today chanting Texas Fight!
