Hit & Run: Everything’s Better at 100 mph

Happy (belated) 23rd birthday, Lebron!  Also, sweetie, don’t drive over the speed limit.  Especially not 35 mph over!  He was ticketed on December 30th, at 3 am, and his attorney has filed a not guilty plea.  A hearing is scheduled for February 11.  After yesterday’s practice, James said: “I was doing 101. That’s it. I was speeding. I’ve just got to abide by the law. I got caught. It happens.  I don’t know (if I will continue traveling at such speeds), maybe at times. It’s not a big deal to me. You’ve just got to abide by the rules that’s all. I made a mistake and I’ll live with it.”

Nice cavalier attitude there, James. (I’m sorry.)

The Washington Wizards defeated the Boston Celtics, 88-83, handing them only their sixth loss of the season.  It was also the second Wizards victory over the Celtics in three days.  Caron Butler scored 21 points, while Antawn Jamison had 20 points and 10 rebounds of his own.  The Celtics choked away a 14-point lead.

A few more pics from that game (add your own captions, people, it’s almost quittin’ time!):

The Portland Trailblazers stomped the New Jersey Nets, 99-73.  And that’s all I’ll say about that.

The Sacramento Kings snapped the Dallas Mavericks 7-game winning streak, beating them by the score of 122-120.  Kings owner Gavin Maloof celebrates by getting down with his bad self.

Over in the NHL, in the only game last night, the Pittsburgh Penguins won against the New York Rangers, 4-1.  Evgeni Malkin scored three of those goals – a hat trick! that’s always fun! – for the Pens.  That was Malkin’s second hat trick in 6 games.  Impressive.

Meanwhile, in CFB, Steve Slaton (oft tormentor of my Scarlet Knights) of the West Virginia Mountaineers has decided to skip his senior year and declared for the draft.  Buh-bye, Slaton.  Also forgoing their senior years: Darren McFadden and Felix Jones of Arkansas, and Mario Manningham of Michigan.

Finally, in CBB, #15 Pittsburgh beat #5Georgetown, 69-60.  Yay, Clare!

  1. Why is everyone making a big deal about Lebron getting a speeding ticket? There’s a hell of a lot worse things he could do. And 101 isn’t even that fast.

  2. Choose your caption #3: Boston Celtics’ forward Kevin Garnett chokes on large orange ball. Washington Wizards’ forward Caron Butler performs Heimlich Maneuver on Garnett saving Celtics’ season and Garnett’s life.

  3. Why is everyone making a big deal about Lebron getting a speeding ticket?

It’s not that big a deal, shoot, I speed. I once got stopped for going 92. (Luckily, the state trooper didn’t give me a speeding ticket, but a failure to obey signs tickets, which carried less points.) What got me was how he answered the questions. “I don’t know (if I will continue traveling at such speeds), maybe at times”? Why say that? I know he’s just showing that it’s not a big deal to him, but I don’t know.

I guess it’s that I see the same attitude in my 21-year-old brother, and it bothers me that he (my brother) has such little disregard for traffic laws, and I’m probably projecting this onto Lebron.

  4. Racing is for the track not a street littered with old people, dogs, kids with bicycles, and young inexperienced drivers. If you want to race give us a call, we can put you to work building some stuff that goes 100 in second gear.

Get a job as a driver and then get killed on the track you might even make SportsCenter.

    Will

  5. @Penguin: He wasn’t going 101 on a “street littered with old people, dogs, kids with bicycles, and young inexperienced drivers.” It was on the freeway at 3 AM. I can understand if it was 101 in a 35 zone on a congested city street but let’s be real about it. He was probably in the middle of fucking nowhere with no one around. Moral of the story: buy a radar detector.

  6. Doug, I have a radar detector. It’s too sensitive; it beeps at the slightest provocation. I’ve learned to tune out the beeping, so that means I still get tickets. Nothing like getting a speeding ticket on Halloween morning while wearing kitty ears and Amy Winehouse eyeliner.

  7. So long, farewell, and seeya Mario. You’re petulant child routine will not be missed next season.

And that picture of Gavin Maloof makes him look like…odd.

  8. Since I already made this fuss once, I’ll do it again to be consistent: Bobby Phills would like LeBron James to slow the fuck down. Thanks.

  9. Penguin & Tuffy – TOUCHE’. Doesn’t anyone remember what those victims from the driver education movies looked like??
Looks like the Schillings didn’t get much sun over their Christmas/New Year vacation.

  10. I did 35 over on one of the suburbs of Chicago and I got a court date! That’s unfair!

Of course the speed limit there was only 35mph… Ha!

So what if the dude wants to die young and throw away all that money! LOL

  11. Radar detectors are one of the best ways of avoiding that speeding ticket. Think about the costs involved in a speeding ticket. You have the ticket, possible court costs, points off license, and rising insurance costs. You can protect yourself with a good radar detector. You can check out our line of detectors. We carry a portable by K-40 that even gives you a one year ticket rebate if you do happen to get a ticket. Protection and prevention is the key to anything.
