I’m hopped up on Ny-Quil, and slightly delirious after the Mets’ sweep of the Braves, so bear with me.
The Mets division lead is back up to 5 games, thanks to said weekend sweep of the Braves, and yesterday’s 10-4 win over the Reds. Well, I guess I also have to thank the Marlins for taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies, and the Braves for beating the Phillies today (whew!). Pedro pitched 5 good innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 of them earned. The Mets’ offense woke up: Moises Alou, David Wright and Carlos Delgado all homered for the Mets. Let’s see if the bats can stay awake during this final stretch run.Also, congrats to Pedro on getting his 3,000th K, with his second inning K of opposing pitcher, Aaron Harang:
Andy Phillips – out with a broken wrist
Meanwhile, over in the Bronx, the Yankees proved to be good for what ailed the Mariners. Coming off a 9-game losing streak, the Mariners beat the Yankees, 7-1. King Felix pitched 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits. Roger Clemens, on the other hand, didn’t make it to the fifth, going only 5 innings, and allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. And Clemens is getting an MRI on his right elbow, which he claims tightened up during the game. With the Red Sox beating the Blue Jays 13-10 in a crazy game at Fenway, the Yankees are now 7 games back in the AL East, and are holding onto a slim 1-game lead over the Mariners in the Wild Card race.
San Diego Padre Jake Peavy is pulling out all the punches, asking for the ball on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. That would be only the second time he’s pitched on 3 days rest, after throwing 99 pitches in 7 innings on Saturday in a win over the Dodgers. His GM and manager have said they’re considering it.
Over in golf, two days after watching Buccholz’s no-hitter over at Fenway, Phil Mickelson held off Tiger Woods to win the Deutsche Bank Championship. I don’t know much about golf, but the man did win, so he deserves a mention.

Clemson hung on after staking an early lead on Florida State, with the younger Bowden taking this match, 24-18.
And I’ll wrap this up with some tennis news: James Blake lost yesterday to Tommy Haas, leaving Andy Roddick as the lone American man in the U.S. Open. Lucky Andy – he’s going up against Roger Federer (who beat Feliciano Lopez to reach the Open quarters) next.

Despite the Mets uni, I still can’t help but have a little bit of love for Pedro.
Jake Peavy is HOTTT (that’s three T’s), and I am 100% in favor of putting him on a 3-day rotation– not only because I then get to see him more PLUS it wears him out and that hopefully can help push the Phils up in the standings.
ROGER NO!!!!!!!!!! (except it means it will hurt the Yankees, so at least there’s a silver lining)

And no, finding Andy Phillips hot isn’t wrong. He’s hot, regardless of that uni he’s wearing.
Poor Andy Phillips – you ladies made me realize the hotness combination of high socks + eye black and Andy rocks that oh-so-well. Now we’re stuck with more Greasy Giambi at 1st. Ugh.

Mel – Giambi used to be cute. When he played for the A’s. I don’t know what it was about coming to NY, but he’s turned into a greaseball since.
That photo of Tommy Haas is begging to be photoshopped so he’s in a winter wonderland catching snowflakes on his tongue.
Metsy – Jeremy Giambi was in the stands the other day and looked seemingly normal. Guess Jason got the baseball genes & Jeremy got the properly functioning sweat glands? Either way, he’ gross. Hopefully we’ll be seeing plenty of Shelley Duncan and Doug Mientkiewicz as an antidote to the grease.
We know how I feel about the Mets, but I take my hat off to Pedro. He seemed to get stronger as the day went on, which is amazing. I know we’ll see him next week at Shea, and I’m terrified.
