Real Men of Genius: Clay pitches a no-hitter!

Congratulations, Clay Buchholz! Today, you pitched the game of your life. 9 innings, no hits, against the Baltimore Orioles. In your second major-league start. (Match that, Ian Kennedy!) Quite impressive, young man.

And not only do you pitch the hell out of that ball game, you gave a completely charming interview to What’s-her-face (Texy told me her name is Tina, but I prefer what’s-her-face). This line made me tear up (in happiness at your achievement): “It’s amazing. That’s all I can say. I’m in a blur right now.” You recognized that you had to call your parents, and I swooned at that. Well, at that, and the adorable Texan accent. You are now the 17th pitcher in Red Sox history to throw a no-no, and the first rookie pitcher to do so.

Congrats, and I hope you party tonight till you forget your name. I recommend Patron.

A few more pics after the jump…

I don’t know what it is about it, but I love the pitcher-in-his-catcher’s-arms picture.

ETA: I didn’t add this last night, because I wasn’t exactly sure of the quote.  Then I lost track of time this morning between Mass, brunch, and what have you.  But I wanted to post what Josh Beckett jokingly said after the game: “He did a lot better than Curt Schilling did.  A lot better than Schilling.”  Hilarious.  (Becket was referring to Curt’s no-hit attempt earlier this year against the Oakland A’s.)

  1. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Big, huge, gigantic, humongous congratulations to Clay- all of Red Sox Nation is deliriously lucky to have you!

It seems like just a couple of weeks ago I was at Fenway watching him make his first major league start… OH WAIT, it WAS just two weeks ago. Holy cow, what an accomplishment for any pitcher, much less a kid rookie in just his second outing!

  2. Wow, good for him, that’s an amazing accomplishment. And I think that pic of the catcher hugging him is sooo cute too. They’re so happy!

  3. I love no-hitters, especially when you are called up that day. What a great thing to happen to a rookie. Can’t wait to see all the great things he does with his career! Yeah, I also think the picture of the catcer hugging him is cute too!

  4. Aw, and he didn’t sleep last night:
“I did try,” said Buchholz. “[I] laid down for maybe 10 minutes, [it] just didn’t work out the way I thought it would. [I] sort of rolled with the punches, stayed awake and came in here about 8 o’clock this morning. I attempted to go to sleep probably at 4 o’clock — didn’t happen; [so I] went and got something to eat and came here. There’s no reason for me to try to fall asleep because it’s not going to happen. I’m running on fumes right now.”

    He’s too adorable.

  5. Off-topic, but any truth the rumour that one of the Ladies… features in the film “Illegal Tender”? Seriously, look at the movie poster sometime, or go to imdb. It’s right there.

  6. That kid is fucking amazing. I didn’t get to see the game (DAMN IT!), however, I saw it today on Sportscenter and my mouth was just hung open. My roommate kept looking at me and then at TV going “What’s a no-hitter?”
    ….
    Girls…Seriously…

I share a name with her. But, no, we’re not the same person. She’s 20 years older than me! Plus, she gets to sex Jimmy Smits. And I – do not.
