Western Athletic Conference Hangover-Finally Sweet Release

NMSU mascotFinally, a game that was interesting from beginning to end. A game that was competitive from both teams and had all the drama we expect from March. Thank you New Mexico State. Thank you Utah State. Your stately battle was a good one and thanks to a minor upset by the hands of Utah St., your conference will be getting two teams into the tournament this year. Wiggidy WAC indeed.

The WAC tournament pretty much went chalk, with some higher seeds escaping with 2- and 3-points wins, especially Utah State, eking out a win against Hawaii. One upset that happened in the early rounds was Boise State upsetting Fresno State in the quarterfinals. Continuing that momentum from the Fiesta Bowl I see. In the end it didn’t matter cause they were blown out by New Mexico State in the semifinals. In fact, New Mexico St. pretty much had an easy time at the beginning of the WAC Tournament and got the chance to host the final on their home court, although the conference did change the logo at mid-court for the final.

Utah State had the opposite tourny experience at the beginning, barely beating Hawaii as said above and defeating the top seed Nevada by two points. Chaz Spicer nailed two free throws with 2.5 seconds left to win the game for them. In the end I guess the better team won and not the team with more close calls.

New Mexico State won the WAC Tournament over Utah State, 72-70. Utah St. was given one last shot when the ball was thrown out of bounds by New Mex. St., but the last second heave didn’t go it and we got to see a shot of the New Mex. St. students rushing the floor. Good for them. New Mex. St. has the automatic bid and Nevada will get in being that they’re in the Top 25 and all.
